Ron Cox is an experienced civil litigation attorney. He has a broad range of experience, with primary emphasis in the areas of class actions, catastrophic injury cases, and business litigation. His clients include publicly traded companies, small businesses, and individuals. Prior to founding Proffitt & Cox, Ron practiced in Northeast Columbia for nine years as partner in the boutique litigation firm Bower Orr L.L.P. He most recently served as special counsel in the Columbia office of Nexsen Pruet LLC, one of the largest law firms in the Carolinas. Ron employs a professional approach that emphasizes responsiveness, efficiency, preparation, and tenacity in the representation of his clients.
Ron handles class action lawsuits. He recently successfully represented residents of a rural community in a multi-million dollar class action related to emissions from a factory. He frequently evaluates claims for pursuit as class actions and has several current investigations of potential class action claims.
Ron has experience handling a variety of serious personal injury and wrongful death cases including those related to defective products, trucking accidents, prescription drugs, medical malpractice, chemical exposures, and automobile collisions. Over the last several years his clients have recovered over $17 Million Dollars.
Ron is also proud of his representation of companies that are sued in cases alleging asbestos exposure. He has served as a member of the national coordinating counsel teams for several manufacturers, defending thousands of asbestos claims across the country. Ron represents companies as local trial counsel in asbestos litigation in the Carolinas and works to prepare effective and innovative defenses to these claims in cooperation with national coordinating counsel at some of the leading law firms in the country.
Ron handles all types of business litigation, including unfair trade practices, antitrust claims, securities litigation, shareholder disputes, unfair competition, and partnership dissolutions. He represents companies in collecting debts, enforcing intellectual property rights, or pursuing any type claim that is vital to the success of your business. Ron represents owners, contractors, and sureties, in construction claims involving issues such as workmanship defects, mechanic's liens, surety claims, and contract disputes.
Ron earned his Business Administration degree from The University of South Carolina at Aiken where he was named Outstanding Student of Finance and graduated magna cum laude. He earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law from which he graduated cum laude and where he was a member of the Order of Wig and Robe, Order of the Coif, and the South Carolina Law Review.
