South Carolina Dog Bite Law

Under South Carolina dog bite law, dog owners are usually responsible if their dog bites or attacks someone.  Dog owners are liable even if the dog does not have a history of prior attacks.  If a dog bites or attacks a person who is in a public place or is lawfully in a private place (including the property of the dog owner, if there with the owner’s express or implied permission), the dog owner is liable for the damages suffered. There is an exception to this rule if the person bitten provoked or harassed the dog. Dog bite victims are entitled to recover for their medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, scarring, permanent injury, inability to participate in normal activities, and other damages. Boat Operator’s Negligence Injures Teenage Girl

A Georgetown County woman is filing a negligence lawsuit against a reckless boat operator, alleging that his reckless activity severely injured her 14-year-old daughter. On May 25, the girl was a passenger on her father’s boat during an event for the Wounded Warriors Foundation. The two were in the process of mooring and rafting their boat along with several others when the defendant allegedly came speeding through the area. The plaintiff alleges that, despite numerous calls to slow down, the boat operator created a huge wake with his boat and then fled the scene. The boat’s rocking motion caused two boats to come together and crush the girl’s hand so severely that her right thumb was eventually amputated. According to the lawsuit, the girl’s injury was a direct result of the man’s “negligent and careless” behavior. Driver Sentenced for Fatal Hit and Run

A Greenville man is facing 10 years in prison for causing a hit-and-run crash that killed one passenger and injured three others. In July 2013, two married couples were returning from a music event, Fridays by the Fountain, when their golf cart was rear-ended by a burgundy Pontiac. The driver fled the scene, but the police arrested him the following morning. A 75-year-old woman visiting from Tennessee died at the scene after suffering blunt force trauma to the head, neck and chest. The other three riders were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment and were listed in fair to serious condition. The reckless driver was charged with three counts of a hit and run resulting in injury and one charge of a hit and run resulting in death.
