Am I Covered If I Get Hurt at an Employer Sponsored Event?

According to a recent South Carolina Supreme Court ruling, one injured worker received benefits from workers’ compensation outside of what some would consider in the course of employment. In this unique case, Stephen Whigham, an employee of a public relations firm, gained workmans comp benefits after he suffered a serious leg injury while playing kickball. After his boss asked for suggestions on how to develop a more enjoyable workplace atmosphere, Whigham proposed a company kickball game. Liking the idea, Whigham’s boss told him to move forward with organizing the game. It initially seemed like the kickball game was a success, with more than half of the employees at the firm attending. Columbia-Based Company Facing Fines for Wisconsin Worker Injury

Columbia-based company Pure Power Technologies LLC may be facing fines for a burn injury suffered by a Wisconsin plant worker this summer.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is proposing as much as $119,000 in fines. The company is based in South Carolina and makes products for emissions control and fuel systems. OSHA alleges that the company violated safety procedures when the accident occurred at the company’s Waukesha, Wisconsin plant in June. According to OSHA, an employee suffered severe burns while working without protective equipment on a 480-volt circuit breaker. The company is facing 18 citations alleging safety equipment failures. Pure Power has 15 business days to pay OSHA’s fines, contest the allegations or request a meeting with the agency.
