Two people were seriously injured in a Colleton County truck accident on December 16. According to the Colleton County Fire-Rescue Department, a log truck was attempting to cross ACE Basin Parkway at Wood Road around 6:42 p.m. when it turned into the path of a Jeep Cherokee. The Jeep allegedly attempted to swerve and avoid the truck, but struck the rear wheels of the trailer at a high rate of speed.
Emergency officials reported that both people in the Jeep were trapped following the collision and suffered multiple traumatic injuries. First responders rescued both Jeep occupants by opening the driver door with hand tools. Both people in the Jeep were taken via helicopter to a local hospital. The driver of the log truck did not suffer any injuries in the accident.
The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident, and, at the time of this report, no charges have been filed.
Large commercial trucks can weigh up to 80,000 pounds and are incredibly dangerous vehicles on the road. When truck drivers are negligent, serious truck accidents can occur that can severely injure other motorists. Trucks can be threatening on highways and streets and, oftentimes, the force they bring into accidents can cause fatal injuries for other motorists.
All too often, truck accidents are at the fault of the truck driver for either inattentiveness, driver error or driver fatigue. When a truck driver does not follow the rules of the road or is simply distracted behind the wheel, life-altering accidents can happen.
