Police are still unsure how a 21-year-old Columbia resident lost control of his vehicle on Saturday, March 15 in Lexington County. The driver was headed down Boiling Springs Road in a 2007 Chevy Cobalt when his vehicle swerved up an embankment, flipped, struck a telephone pole and collided with a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Thankfully, both were wearing seatbelts at the time. Emergency crews arrived and escorted the driver to the hospital where he died of his wounds.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office and SC Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident; however, there seems to be no evidence of foul play, drugs or alcohol. As such, accidents like these serve as a solemn reminder of how easy it can be to lose control of an automobile. Something as minor as a roadside distraction can result in a tragic car accident. In addition, factors outside of the driver’s control such as inclement weather or poor road conditions can send a vehicle spinning out of control.
