Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) was created to help men suffering from hypogonadism, a condition that causes male sex organs to produce little to no testosterone. However, drug manufacturers began advertising TRT as a “cure-all” drug to help older men fight the aging process in an effort to boost sales.
Pharmaceutical companies have released a barrage of print and television media aimed at seniors, promising that TRT will give them more energy, help retain muscle mass and improve sexual performance. However, several studies have shown that TRT’s benefits may not be worth the risk.
Is Testosterone Therapy Safe?
Studies published in reputable medical journals, such as PLOS One Journal and Journal of the American Medical Association, have shown that testosterone therapy can put older male patients at risk for several health issues, such as:
- elevated blood pressure
- blood clots
- enlarged prostate
- heart attack
- premature death
Drug companies have tried to downplay the harmful effects of TRT, but ongoing medical studies and mounting lawsuits make the problems hard to ignore.
Testosterone therapy lawsuits against drug companies more than doubled during the month of June. As of June 16, almost 100 lawsuits have been filed against the makers of Androgel, Androderm, Testim and Depo.
All complaints allege that taking one or more testosterone replacement drugs caused them to experience strokes, heart attacks, blood clots and health issues. Some attorneys believe that widespread awareness about the effects of TRT, as well as the passage of time, may be contributing to the dramatic increase.
It is important to note that every one of these lawsuits represents a man whose life was permanently altered by testosterone therapy. In their rush to market the drug to a wider audience, drug companies have negatively impacted the lives of patients as well as their loved ones.
